Module 01: This is a fairly small module providing a quick but deep overview of the characteristics of wastewater, treatment standards, and wastewater treatment processes. Treatment standards provide the basic rules for the water quality to be produced by a treatment system. The characteristics of the wastewater identify the constituent that must be addressed by the design engineer in selecting appropriate wastewater treatment processes. This module will enable students to make a preliminary selection and organization of appropriate processes for treatment of a municipal wastewater.

Module 02: The focus of this module is on the biological treatment unit processes that have invented and used in domestic wastewater treatment. Almost all wastewater containing biodegradable constituents can be treated biologically. Therefore, it is essential that the environmental engineer understand the characteristics of each biological process to ensure that the proper environment is produced and controlled effectively in designs. The information presented in this module provides the necessary background material needed for the design of various treatment units discussed in the next module 03.

Module 03: There has been a steady evolution and development in the biological techniques used for wastewater treatment. The focus of this module is to discuss and identify a proper treatment process for a scenario based on the basic principles depicted in last module. The ultimate goal of this module is to provide perspective on how the principles fit into the overall wastewater design, operation, and maintenance. Modeling tools and steady-state mass balance calculations are then introduced to complete a wastewater treatment plant design project.

Module 04: The purpose of this module is to enrich students with drinking-water treatment design with an emphasis on the wastewater potable reuse. Modern water and wastewater treatment concepts and practices, such as the decentralized wastewater treatment design, Water-Energy-Food Nexus, and membrane technologies in drinking-water and wastewater treatment are presented in detail. Guess lectures from design engineers, wastewater treatment practitioners, and water authorities are given to promote a better understanding among students of their future career development, also interactions between students and their potential employers in the field of water and wastewater treatment.
