Examines natural environmental processes and their relevance to engineering. Soil and water chemistry, equilibrium and organic chemistry, microbiology, biochemistry and biological processes will be examined, focusing on the application of these in engineering design, practice and management. Students will show an understanding of conventional and molecular techniques used in environmental microbiology along with their use in assessing microbial role in key biogeochemical cycles (e.g. carbon, nitrogen, sulfur, and phosphorus) and the use of microbial processes in remediation of contaminated environments.

The students will be able to apply water quality parameters to assess the status of New Zealand's lakes and rivers, specify governing equations for the flow and transport of contaminants in rivers and lakes, develop kinetic and steady state analytical solutions for simple point/non-point sources, and model the behaviour of pollutants in lakes using STELLA.
