Highway alignment geometrics (horizontal, vertical and cross sectional design). Basis of the main pavement design techniques, pavement materials, stabilisation, compaction and bituminous surfacings. .

Fundamental Design Considerations: The student will be able to identify and describe the fundamental parameters (e.g. road user, vehicle and environment) that affect highway geometric design. They will also be able to describe and determine the various speed parameters used in geometric design.

Geometric Alignment: The student will be able to derive, apply and analyse fundamental horizontal curve parameters. They will be able to compute horizontal geometry calculations for circular and transition curves. The student will be able to apply, analyse and solve fundamental vertical curve solutions and be able to compute vertical geometry calculations. The student will be able to apply road cross section elements to the alignment and understand the impact of traffic volumes on the design of the cross section.

Bituminous Surfacings: The students will have a fundamental understanding of material properties and test methods for bitumen and sealing aggregates. They will be able to differentiate between the different surfacing types and understand in what circumstances to apply them. They will gain an understanding of chipseal construction methods and be able to compute bitumen application rates for chipseal design based on various design inputs.

Pavement Design: The student will be able to analyse and compute pavement mechanistic designs and describe pavement behaviour on the basis of various provided stress and strain conditions for pavement materials, subgrade strength and traffic loading conditions.
