Topics include: worldwide geothermal development, types of geothermal systems, geothermal geology, resource estimation, thermodynamics, properties of water and steam, steam-field equipment, geothermal power cycles, direct use of geothermal energy, completion tests, two-phase flow, flow measurements, geothermal reservoir engineering modelling theory, reinjection, scaling and corrosion, drilling engineering, heat exchangers, geothermal well-test analysis, stimulation, sedimentary geology, oil and gas formation, petroleum reservoir engineering.
Prerequisite: CHEMMAT 313 or ENGSCI 343 or MECHENG 311, and ENGSCI 311 or 313 or 314Restriction: GEOTHERM 601, 602, 603, 620

Further notes

EOTHERM 785 introduces students from any Engineering discipline to geothermal and petroleum engineering. Students from relevant Science disciplines are also welcome to enrol.

The course is less mathematical than a typical Engineering Science Part 4 course would be.

The course is assessed via

- 60 % internal assessment on 5 assignments

- 40% on a written test at the end of week 12


The course is lectured by Rosalind Archer, with contributions from guest lecturers.

One average there will be 3 hours of class per week - though additional hours may be timetabled to give flexibility around Rosalind's travel commitments etc.

The course includes a field trip to Taupo, funded by a philanthropic donor. Provisional dates for this are Sept 12 and 13, 2019.
